Tips on Improving your Essay for College Admission
Make your college admissions essays really count
College admissions essays can be quite an unnerving task for many potential college students desiring to get into a really good school. Some schools may not be as strict when it comes to the admissions essay, while many universities need to be completely enamored it seems in order to even get anywhere with them in regards to your admissions essay.
So here are some tips on improving your college admissions essay in order to help provide you with a good start to writing your college entrance essay:
Try to stay on a topic that you know a lot about when considering what to write about yourself.
Try to use a little light humor in your admissions essay, but not in a ridiculous manner. Try to entertain them in writing a bit when showing your humble side in reference to your selected topic(s) for your admissions essay.
Don’t try to impress them with big words that you found in a thesaurus while writing the admissions essay. Try to just be yourself. If you aren’t using your own words, it may come across as a little choppy or “suspect” as it will appear as though the voice has shifted or been changing throughout the writing. Do you really want them to believe you are someone you really aren’t?
Try to type your college admissions essay if you can. If not, then just write as neatly as you can. Illegible admissions essays may not show the best side of your abilities and may also confuse the reader greatly if they cannot understand what is even being said.
Try to start with a first or rough draft of your college admissions essay and then progress into your final draft in order to weed out unnecessary statements and/or irrelevant details in the admissions essay.
Keep in mind that all different types of people of all different sexes and ages will be reading your admissions essay so try to keep your writing to the widest possible audience possible.
Be yourself. Write the most honest take on yourself that you can when writing stories about yourself and your beliefs. If too many things are made up and/or embellished, it may look a little fishy to the admissions essay readers and in response may be a little hard to believe and rather hard to read if this is the case. No one wants to be fooled so it’s best to just write what you know about.
Remember to practice proper grammar in your college admissions essay. If proper grammar is not used and only slang terms, for example, many college admissions essay readers will most likely not want to read it all the way through. In many cases they will read it, but it may not leave the best general impression on them academically speaking.
Have your family and friends take a critical and constructive look at your admissions essay and allow them to comment on the parts they feel need improving. Especially ask the opinions of those who have already written a college admissions essay and gotten into a great college! They have done it and succeeded so follow their lead.
Keep your essay within the limits they give you in terms of essay length and so on. Follow the rules they set. They have many essays to read and cannot read an entire 20 page essay about one’s entire memoir of their life and times up until this very moment. They will give you guidelines to follow when putting it all together.
