Dorm Decorating Tips
Find out all about your dorm room
Before planning what to bring to your new pad, find out what the dimensions of the college dorm room will be , how much storage space there will be, as well as what the dorm provides and what they think you should bring in order to complete the basics of the room. You may not have to contact the school directly as there may be information online in regards to you room and what the college recommends that you bring on your first day of school in order to make the most of that first week back to school.
Get in touch with your roommate
The sooner you contact your new roommate the better you will both be ready to take care of all the things necessary for both of you to have a more pleasurable experience living together. Some things we recommend that you discuss would be the decorating budget and how it will be divided, if it is at all. In many cases, one roommate may be more indifferent about the living situation giving the other full control over the dorm décor. It is important to start off the year in agreeance in regards to issues such as dorm room THEME and color scheme as this is what both of you will be having to look at every single day of the coming school year. If anything ,try to find out what you both agree that you DON’T want in the room. Maybe that would be a great start.
Before buying anything, find out what the college dorm will not allow
Most dorms will not allow anything having to do with fire-related items such as candles and even halogen lamps. There have been many cases where the halogen lamps have caught certain things on fire, such as clothing that was not supposed to be on top of the lamp in the first place. But, the dorms just want to make sure everything is as safe for the students as it can be.
Begin making your list of items to bring to the dorm
This is usually categorized as those things that are absolute necessities, such as power strips, lamps, bed sheets, and those items that you would like to bring with you on the first day to campus. List all of the things that you already have available and THEN start shopping.
Since one of the biggest issues in a dorm room is conserving SPACE in such a small room, some ideas to get you started would include space-saving storage units such as collapsible shelving, “stackable” desk shelving, plastic stick-on hooks, a shower organizer (for those long walks to the restroom), shoe racks, hangers and more.
You will be surprised how fast the money supply can dwindle on the first week of school simply through purchasing items that you could have simply brought from home. Also, include those items that your roommate will be supplying, as well. Hopefully, together you will not have to purchase a whole lot and just spend time setting things up at the dorm. There will be a lot going on at the university during that first week and you may not want to miss any of it because of shopping, waiting in lines at the store and installing stuff.
Go over the items that you still need
Once you have compiled the list of things you will already have for the dorm, you can now start finding out about the dorm décor items that you still will be needing. In addition, school supplies and accessories should be placed in the queue of items that need to be purchased before moving in. There is nothing worse than beginning classes and not having the things that you need simply because you didn’t prepare. You have to run out and find a store that carries them, if they still are in stock, and run back before its time to go to bed.
There are many sites online that can help with your dorm décor needs such as the many sites listed here at the Back To School Network website. Simply visiting these many sites can help you get a good idea of how much all the things you need will cost. Many of the sites even have dorm item ideas, checklists and shipping services that will help you get the items you want at a good cost and the convenience of having those items waiting for you at your new pad at the dorm.
Select the best choices for your dorm and roommate situation
Now is the time to make your selections as everything has been narrowed down to what you will be able to afford to bring and what both you and your roommate will both appreciate all year long. You can visit all the sites online that provide products and compare prices and products while setting up delivery for the selected items. You will already have your measurements of the dorm so making decisions on desks (if they are not provided already) and such will be made here. Make sure the measurements are correct because it’s a terrible feeling to have the desk delivered only to discover that it does not even fit where you wanted to put it.
These tips should be able to get your dorm décor thought processes going. Please feel free to visit any of the sites listed here at the Back To School Network and educational resource for more tips and information.
