College Financing Options Scholarships and Grants Scholarships and grants are some of the best ways to fund a college education by far. In this case, none of the scholarship or grant money will ever have to be paid back. These are normally awarded through the student’s past efforts in high school and so on. There are many scholarships available to students and can be found at sources online such as college-scholarships.com. Each scholarship can be very different from the next in terms of requirements and we recommend that you take advantage of scholarship directories and more in order to find the right scholarship for your particular needs and follow the procedures for each individual scholarship program. Grants Currently, our government offers more financial assistance in the form of grants than they ever have in the past as a result of the No Child Left Behind Act. Now students from all backgrounds can receive a college education. The Federal Grants include: The Pell Grant, Academic Competitiveness (AC) Grant, and The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART Grant). The government usually offers the money to help pay the expenses of college through grants. Common sources of grants are Federal and state governments, colleges and universities, as well as public and private organizations. College grants usually fall within one of four common categories such as student-specific, subject-specific, degree level, and grants specifically designed for minorities and low-income students. For student-specific grants there are non-traditional, low-income and disadvantaged, graduate and doctoral grants, high school and undergraduate grants, military grants and more. For subject-specific grants, many corporations will offer internships, fellowships, scholarships and grants that are awarded in order to seek out those academically-driven students and to potentially merge those students into their company in the future. There are many opportunities for those students who fall into some of the selected categories especially in areas such as healthcare, nursing and teaching. As for state grants, in many cases, they will differ from state to state and it would be a good idea to begin looking into college grants and student loan options provided by your individual state either online or by calling the financial aid offices at your selected school(s). |
