Tips on Preparing for College Preparing for College Living It may be unfortunate for many parents, but their children will be leaving home for the first time in most cases when going off to college. This means the new student will have to fend for themselves in terms of paying expenses, working a job if they will have one, meeting school deadlines and more. Oftentimes this can be quite an unsettling experience for many students at first. So preparing for these issues early will help the new student have a much more pleasant experience during their first year away from home. All in all, everything the student had learned in high school studies, with the exception of home economics, will only prepare them for the academic side of college. But, what about those other things that will really take a hold on their life without mom and dad around to help them out? Well they will just have to learn on their own. However, it would be good to show them a thing or two in order to get them started on the right foot. Some basic “survival tips” include: Get a small refrigerator and microwave Learn some basic cooking tips (see Cooking in College section) Consider work/job options available on campus or off-campus Learn how to deal with a roommate situation as well as the responsibilities of paying rent Change credit card and other important addresses (also paying off credit cards and making sure they don’t mess up their credit while in college Laundry skills will end up being a necessity, as well as other bills besides credit and rent Be sure to protect your credit and identifying information. Be prepared to lock doors at all times Stay healthy. Please see our College Health Tips section Get in touch with roommate(s) and sync up. Make sure you both agree on this before arriving. See section on Roommates/Dorm Decor Some other tips include how to be frugal with money in terms of shopping, dealing with social issues such as dating and the effects it has on school, taking care of their health, transportation issues, and even how to take care of themselves and their property while living on their own as theft seems to occur quite often in college. Overall, this is just a small summary of what a student can do in order to prepare for the college life. The best way a person will learn, of course, is by doing. But it never hurts to know a little something about it first. The transition from living at home to college is always going to have a large impact on the person and the issues involved with living on one’s own should, in most cases, not be overlooked by the parents as every little tip here and there will help as most children will remember important tips from their parents about life in general…good and bad. Good preparation is vital to that first year of college so why not help them out with a nice collection of advice and supplies to start them off on their new adventure in college. |
