What is a Perkins Loan?
About Perkins Loans:
A Perkins loan is basically a federal student loan for both undergraduate and graduate students which is applied for through the financial aid office at your college or university. The funds come through your college; however, they are Federal funds. Up to around $4,000 can be borrowed each year for undergraduates which depends on the student’s financial need, how much their schooling costs as well as when the student is applying.
The interest rates are usually pretty low for Perkins loans.
Perkins loans will begin the repayment schedule 9 months after graduation and/or withdrawing from college. However, there are late charges if a student does not pay on time or skips payments.
